About Us

Community Connections | Te Hāpori Āwhina Tāngata is a community-based disability support provider operating across much of the North Island.

Our vision is an inclusive Aotearoa where disabled people are valued and supported to live the lives they choose. We are committed to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, the NZ Disability Strategy, and the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

We welcome applications from all backgrounds, especially Māori, Pasifika, LGBTQIA+ communities, and people with lived experience of disability or mental health.

The Role

This is a rewarding permanent part-time role, working 32-34 hours per fortnight, supporting a man living in Kāpiti to live the life he chooses.

He enjoys an active lifestyle, including walks, surfing, swimming, fishing, and spending time with family. This role would suit someone who is physically fit, enjoys being outdoors, and is comfortable supporting active community-based routines.

Working alongside him, you will provide positive role modelling, encourage independence, support healthy routines, and help strengthen his connections with whānau and the wider community.

You will also support emotional wellbeing by following established behaviour and support plans. Your ability to remain calm, respectful, and consistent will be key to creating a safe, stable, and empowering environment.

If you enjoy fitness, outdoor activities, and supporting people to build confidence and independence, this is an opportunity to make a meaningful difference.

About You

You are patient, reliable, and motivated to create positive change. You understand the importance of clear boundaries, structure, and empathy when supporting people with complex needs. You are comfortable with household tasks, can model healthy routines, and bring the resilience needed to respond to challenging situations calmly and professionally.

Previous experience in disability or mental health support is highly desirable, particularly if you have supported individuals who benefit from behaviour support strategies. Your ability to follow detailed plans, work collaboratively in a team, and build trust will be essential.

We’re looking for:

  • Experience in disability or mental health support
  • Understanding of behaviour support strategies
  • Understanding of Intellectual Disabilities
  • Confidence in setting clear, professional boundaries
  • Resilience and the ability to stay calm in challenging situations
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills
  • Commitment to inclusive, person-directed support
